Multi-drug resistant (MDR) TB is a major problem for the poor of Kolkata. The cost of treatment through the DOTS plus regime is around Rs 3000, needs two years and no government hospital is equipped to treat it. Further a ministry of health survey indicates one MDR patient infects 14 more annually. For many patients NGOs like Calcutta Rescue are the only viable source of free treatment.
